Ă Donnnghaile comes from the personal name DonnĂĄil, which is composed of the words âdonnâ meaning âbrownâ, and âgalâ meaning âbraveryâ. The Donnellys are descended from DonnĂĄil Oâ Neill, who was himself a descendant of Niall of the Nine Hostages. The Donnelly clanâs original territory was in Co. Donegal, but they subsequently moved to Co. Tyrone, where their name is remembered in the town of Ballydonnelly. Donnelly is the 65th most numerous surname in Ireland today.
The hand knit Donnelly sweater has a lobster claw centre stitch, flanked by cables, zig-zags, rope and blackberry panels on either side. The lobster claw symbolises a wish for prosperity, cables are good luck, and blackberry is symbolic of the Holy Trinity. This beautiful Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional bĂĄinĂn (pronounced âbaw neenâ) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a clan history and crest. It is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.
